My boss said he will give me x rating but when appraisal is released, I got c rated. Am feeling depressed.what to do?

Stop believing random strangers ( boss included), and start switching companies

Like others said, don't believe strangers including your boss or coworkers that they'll give you something. And definitely don't attach your self-worth or even your "professional talent" with company appraisals, it only exists so that bosses can judge other bosses. They'll pinky promise about bonus salary, paid overtime (which cannot happen without involving accounts dept) just to get you to work harder for them, but even they cannot provide it on their own without being scrutinized by other bosses. They'll be questioned "How did you give such high rating to a newcomer? Is he really that good? Is he better than x, y and z? Why is your dept not making money if you got such star employees?"

So to avoid such nagging from their in-laws/middle management they give ratings based on seniority. Older the employee, more the marks. Im assuming you're a new employee because you worded that you're feeling depressed from trusting your boss about ratings. Most employees learn quickly that bosses are petty servants of management, and that appraisal ratings are meaningless. Kinda like a star mark your teacher would give you if you had good handwriting on your homework.

There are no academic marks in corporate, there's no "climbing the corporate ladder towards success". You just, go at your own pace and create your own fulflling life. Cheers

Next time record your boss statement or get him to sign on a stamp paper to be on the safe side. You get what you deserve. Period. No need to feel depressed try next time. Also avoid linkedin for the next few weeks :) to avoid the species who keep posting thrilled to announce, happy to share, proud to receive...they have a parallel world operating.
