Why Are Hindi Speakers Expected to Use Kannada, But IT Companies Aren't?

In Bangalore, many Hindi-speaking people are often expected to speak in Kannada. But when it comes to major IT companies like Microsoft and Google, there’s no such expectation. Why the difference? If locals believe that those living in Bangalore should adapt to Kannada, shouldn't companies operating in the city be held to the same standard? Why don’t Bangaloreans insist that IT companies conduct business in Kannada—or else leave the city? Would love to hear your thoughts! Should IT companies be required to use Kannada in their operations? If yes, how can that happen? If no, why not?

With regards to the recent incident happened at SBI bank, my point is If someone had spoken kannada in their entire life how can they speak Hindi in Karnataka and the rbi itself made a rule that if a bank employee working in any state they should know a basic local language to communicate with elder people who don't know any other language except kannada, why this scene blown internet is because of the employer attitude n arrogant behaviour.

I completely agree with you, but the same logic should apply to everyone. When people move to a different state for work, how can they be expected to immediately speak the local language? As you mentioned, if someone has been speaking a different language since childhood, it’s unrealistic to expect them to learn a new one in a short period. Promoting a language is one thing, but enforcing it is entirely different. I've also noticed that many Kannadigas understand other languages but still insist that others speak only Kannada. If people truly want to promote their language, shouldn’t they work towards making it globally recognized? If the goal is to establish Kannada as a business language, then why not push major tech giants like FANG to conduct business in Kannada—or else leave the city? After all, similar demands are made of individuals who come to Bangalore for jobs.

I’ve never understood why language has to be associated with culture. and never understand point of debate on this useless topic

If I say, “Bhai, tumko bolna hai toh Kannada bolo, aapas mein baat karo,” and I respond, “Mujhe Hindi aati hai, main woh bolunga” — that should be fine. If I can’t communicate with you, someone else will. Simple as that.

I’m paying for everything — sometimes even overpaying — so I’ll decide how things will work for me. Why should I be responsible for preserving your culture? Do that among yourselves.

A local vendor will speak Kannada with a Kannadiga. But if he wants me to buy from his shop, he should know basic communication — or we can just use sign language. That’s how it works in other countries where language barriers exist.

We’re not asking you to speak Hindi, and you shouldn’t ask us to speak Kannada. There are far more important things in life — like innovation. Let India focus on growth and progress.

Every time I see pointless debates on this topic, it frustrates me — people are getting beaten up just for not speaking Kannada. What kind of goon behavior is this?

You keep calling us “Northies,” but the truth is, a lot of people here depend on us for their daily needs. Your livelihoods are often running because of the hard work and earnings of people like us.

And yet, we’re the ones who have to endure your insults?

IT companies do not behave like they own the land. iT companies do not speak rudely to people. iT companies doesn't speak loudly in public spaces without any care for others. IT companies when renting houses don't have unreasonable demands.

I can go on, but I think you can get the gist.

I have seen many individuals they pretend like they own this whole Bangalore land. I have seen many people speaking rudely over language issue. Again same many people speak loudly specially cab drivers without even caring about police and others. Renting the house demands seriously?? I think landlord makes more demands and even you might have seen or read it many times over news.

Same here buddy even other people can go on

Many people are talking about language imposition. But I feel no language is difficult if we try to learn. When foreigners come to India, they try to speak a few local words. Even we do the same when we go to other countries. I joined a foreign language class and in just two months, I could speak basic words. If we can learn other languages, we should also respect and try to learn Indian languages.

Small effort, big respect.

I totally agree with you. When something is conveyed with pure intentions, it becomes achievable. However, if you try to force someone, even those who genuinely want to learn may end up withdrawing instead.

R u dumb? people in customer-facing roles should speak local language. It's as simple as that

FluffyLlama
FluffyLlama

definitely, agree in this part, company should encourage customer-facing roles to learn local language (that also includes doctors, nurses, gov employees etc)

just need to correct. speak local language with local people if they don't understand english. but don't force it only non-local people.

Hope ao you are not dumb. So can you please answer why people who are not in customer facing roles are forced to speak local language?

DizzyBoba

Why the difference?

Because companies can legally use any language they see fit for their internal operations. And locals can't do shit about it even if they wanted to.

Shouldn't companies operating in the city be held to the same standard?

  • No. Because it's illegal. That's why it can't be enforced. If you mean why shouldn't we change then idk

Why don't bangaloreans insist that companies conduct business in Kannada or else leave the city?

  • External business, they have to support kannada, for internal business they can't do anything about it because karnataka is a part of the Republic of India. And they can't break the law.

Should IT companies be required to use Kannada in their operations?

No. Because of the language barrier.

Language is a tool to communicate.. For elders and uneducated ppl we need to guide them or we can translate by gestures that's what we are mean to them as educated. We should not impose anything on anyone. According to me.
