What is your controversial opinion on Fitness?

The people I see running are people who are physiologically built for running, particularly the distance runners. Ditto for people who ride bicycles, swim, do cross fit, etc. The form of exercise invariably chooses the person rather than the other way around. Those who excel will generally be the ones whose physical make up “fits” the exercise best. It is not a matter of mental toughness or preparation or anything else: running likes runners, swimming likes swimmers, and strength training likes strong people.

What about you?

Mind > Matter.
I went from barely running a 2K to a sub one hour 10K.

I agree partially but disagree when you say it’s not a matter of mental toughness. It most definitely is. Unless you’re looking to be elite, then genes don’t matter being an everyday runner/cyclist.

Those long stretches of nothing where you have to keep pushing is where you need this most. Being consistent and persistently pushing your mind when it tells you no, is what will make you succeed no matter what shape/gene you have.

Agreed, certain genetics and body types make for better athletes of a certain kind. Tall people and basketball for example (tall people in general are good at most athletics i guess).

Mine is that there's no golden rule that works for everyone. Every body type is different.

I know a gujju aunty in my society whose blood sugar is 600-650+. She technically shouldn't be alive at this point and should have had multiple complications by now. But she's still quite healthy and fit all things considered.

Just eat well, stay active and do simple walks. You dont need to go to the gym to be fit

  1. A significant part towards peak human fitness can simply be acquired. Genetics most of the time only plays an incremental role.

  2. Survival of the fittest - Darwin didn't define the fittest strongest, tallest or most intelligent. He defined the fittest as the one who is most adaptable.

  3. Chimps are very ripped. They aren't ripped because they work out - they are fit because they simply do what their body is designed to do. Wild animals are all at their peak fitness, for the same reason.

  4. Humans would never be unfit if they simply revert to the lifestyle they are designed to live - take the stairs, use a squat toilet, use a hard bed, regular bowel movements, play a sport, consume natural unprocessed food, eat only when hungry, deep sleep

Think of it - folks will take up the activity that is easier for them to be consistent and build expertise over time.

Me having a playground near my house growing up meant spending 90% of fitness activity being playing cricket, football and tennis. Now living in a different metro environment, I find strength training at the gym to be easier, long, slow progress than being a runner.

Western practices on fitness are bullshit.

Desi way is the best way to be fit.

There is a very long distance to cover before you hit your genetic limitations. To just be physically fit this shouldn't even bother you.

Your viewpoint sheds light on the importance of aligning physical activities with individual physiological attributes. However, I think there's more to it. While innate abilities do influence performance, the dedication, perseverance, and training regimen one adopts can significantly enhance their capabilities in any form of exercise. It's a dynamic interplay between inherent traits and the effort invested that ultimately defines athletic prowess.

Running vs Lifting Weights?

I’ve always liked running, but someone never liked doing weights. I now realize why the other is important too, I do want muscle mass and I feel it’s critical for longevity.
