I guess so.
I overwork because I live in a constant state of existential crisis, and the only way I can keep myself sane is to occupy my mind with something, and work is just the easiest thing to distract myself with because it also gives me a false sense of having a purpose.

Why can't they binge watch some TV shows instead of working like normal people?
Exactly, even I used to feel the same, but the people like that I have met get anxious when they have free time. One of my ex-colleagues used to join me on my plans on weekends which were completely out of his interest just because he wanted to kill time somehow.
People who call themselves workaholics are people with no life. They live empty lives. Some fill it with material possessions, some work.
This is particularly high in Software development(Corporate in general). I think it is high because most of these guys/girls are those in the top 10% whose purpose in the childhood/teenage years was to outscore everyone else.
Now they are just bringing it to a corporate life where they can't let go of this urge to out-earn everyone else or get recognized as one of the most hardworking or productive or whatnot.
They are too afraid to look at a life outside of this. Because that is scary. Because they are complete noob in other parts of life and it is hard to accept it and start from zero.
So, they form back that toppers groups in schools where everything revolved around studies, jokes were about people who don't study, completion, jealousy, envy, and fear all revolving around studies.
They never question what they are studying or creating. It is just about being part of a system that has specific dynamics.
I overwork because I m so lonely and dont have a life outside office and usually I wear my company's name on my sleeve. Unwanted by everyone , there's no respite hence overwork 😃
