(Rant) Unlimited Leaves is the biggest scam in Indian startups

I can't believe there are still some who get excited about Unlimited PTO policies. Please stop falling for this trap. In the Indian startup ecosystem, this isn't a perk; it is a calculated move to exploit you.

When you have a fixed quota of 24 or 30 days, those leaves are your right. You apply, you go. It is part of your compensation package. If you don't use them, most decent companies let you carry them forward or encash them when you quit. That is money in your pocket.

With "unlimited" leaves, the power dynamic shifts. Suddenly, taking a Friday off becomes a negotiation. You have to justify why you need a break.

I’ve seen engineers in these "cool" Bangalore startups take fewer than 10 days off a year because they are scared of looking uncommitted. There is no counter to track, so there is no accountability.

And the best part for the founders? When you resign, they owe you zero rupees for leave encashment. They save lakhs by removing the liability from their books.

Give me my boring, fixed earned leaves any day. Don't trade your guaranteed rights for a vague policy that depends on your boss's mood.

IBM is good on this regards as it provides EL with unlimited sick leaves. Employee did exploit this unlimited sick leaves policy so now IBM asked for medical proof if the sick leave more than or equals to 3 in a row.

Not at all my GF took one week sick leave with all necessary proofs including treatment docs from most reputed hospitals in Hyd yet within a week of sick leave she was forced to resign and let go without even notice pay ( she worked in Divyashreee building) HR called her parents and threatened that they'll put a case if won't resign unfortunately she resigned due to immense pressure by HR and with in a day she was relieved from all services without notice pay.

I have 3 friends who work for remote USA startups and one for a Swedish startup with the same policy and one guy surprisingly got fired just because he took an extra holiday and his total holidays were like 3 throughout the year and yes he was called uncommitted his startup was cutthroat. He's doing well luckily and managed to get into a PBC. But this policy in general is very very toxic

You know when I heard about unlimited leave policy a couple of years ago for the first time, I was like, it meant that the employee could take 1 month off without any guilt 🀣 I knew very little duniyadaari back then.

My org has this unlimited sick leaves and limited paid leaves, and i think unlimited sick leaves aren't actually something nice and my manager did count all those for a maximum of 2 times in 2 months T_T

It's okay, the move can be played both ways, fine I will work on a Friday evening and complete the Job but I will take a whole week of the next week. I am okay with that sacrifice
