As a PM I would say it is to delivery high quality product in less time. 🕰️
I have worked across 3 startups as ML Engineer, and one thing that I have noticed in smaller teams where the hierarchy is relatively flat is that, everyone likes to step outside of their work scope/boundaries. This thing sounds cool and good, but in reality I find it quite irritating. Many times colleagues who have know clue/working knowledge of ML would come to me, or say in brainstorming meetings why I didn’t go with some approach, or why doesn’t something work. And I end up wasting lots of time justifying my efforts. When working on a problem, there are many constraints that one needs to think of, and one cannot go around in the office explaining every tom dick and harry what they did and why they did it. To make matters worse, in most of the Indian startups, the senior leadership has no clue of ML AI, but will still poke in ML Engineers work and have unrealistic expectations, like getting data/annotations is not possible, try to achieve state of the art results without any data etc etc. Also, once one of my colleague poked someone else in their work. A meeting was going on for some other agenda, and in the middle of that, the colleague said that, ‘hey, why didn’t you go with that approach, would have been more efficient’. The other one replied ‘Because MongoDB doesn’t support it’, and the colleague asking the question who had no clue doubled down on their approach, and it nearly erupted in a fight, wasting 15 mins of 10 odd people in the meeting. Adding a poll below, to understand how often does that happen.
