People who don't speak up

A little about me before the question. I'm a confrontational guy in general but I choose my timing. So people who do not confront especially in an office setting. It can be saying NO to managers when they are being unreasonable, speaking up for your interests or calling out bad behaviour. What is your reasoning behind it?

Not confrontational, hate disagreements
Afraid about the impact it will have on the job/future in the company
Have better ways to deal with it (please share)
I have achieved zen mode. Just want to do 9-5 and return

The problem is there are asshole leaders and managers who take anything we say to their ego. And then on the other side there are gaslighting managers. You never know who tries to become an opportunistic asshole suddenly. So I try my best to remain calm and explain only when asked. I lay down my pros and cons about anything asked. And solely tell it’s my perspective.

Kind of experienced the same, pointed out some major concerns in their decision so I was asked to leave the company as I am not a right fit. It’s scary at times to speak your mind especially in this season. And of course I found the opportunist also who discussed about the same issues but never said anything and blindly agreed. Sometimes it’s just the way cards are dealt.

Probably 2nd option. You need to understand what battles are worth fighting for. But if ask is for more all the time then a line needs to be drawn - altho doing this would obviously change things for me and I need to be prepared for that (inevitable fear).

Those junior teammates who regularly confront, I've generally asked the hr to either layoff them or move to another team.

Once a confronter always a confronter. They always think they are right and think infinite reasons to prove themselves right.

If I became your manager, it happened for a reason, even if I give you unwarranted stress and work.

If I'm taking responsibility and heat for the performance of my team I'll not tolerate confrontation with weak business justification.

I'm well aware that if I'm irrational in my decision on my teammates I'll not be a good person to work with.

Convincing teammates with your ideas is a job of a manager. You should reevaluate your thought process. Suggestion - let them do whatever they want on a small decision, and set the bar on expectations - if they win, then u learnt a new and better way, if they lose, tell them to move to your approach - win win situation

I hate to get caught up in leadership bait and switches, so I keep my trap shut and play poker until someone folds.

Assuming that the two parties are you vs management. Has there been any examples where they have folded without any hoo-ha?

Also there is no folding without ho-ha. Management excels in RRE(Randi Ronadhona Escalation)

I'm not confrontational as well as achieved zen (kinda) I will not have the courage to say No but will avoid it very end, and then act innocent (because deadline has crossed hehe)

You are right. Right place and right time is kind of important. Even though you will never find the perfect timing, it's idiotic to blab whenever you see something you don't like. Patience helps.

This question should be to the (good) leads / managers about their teammates

Individual himself will choose zen mode option because he won't be self aware about his weaknesses and strengths.

Those who don't speak up are the most cunning characters generally. My trust on such people in general is zero unless they prove themselves trustworthy. Those who speak up are known devils, those who don't are unknown devils. Therefore more dangerous.

In certain industries if you speak up they can destroy not only your present chances but also any other scope in future.

I guess if you are just surviving then you are not living. Gotta work hard to get out of survival mode. Then speak your mind up.

With industries who are very much hierarchical you eventually turn into your Asshole bosses to get out of the survival mode. But I agree with u
