My ex boss screwed up

One of my old companies is a startup, a small team of about 8 people after I left. I'm still in touch with them and have a great relationship with everyone there. My ex boss recently laid off around half of the team. In a full team hands-on team the next day he said that the company has enough funds to sustain for around 8 years right now. The people who got laid were all questioning reality since they were a part of the founding team.
