My coworker became my manager after their recent promotion

Has happened to be before. It was shocking the first few days. But then I realized she was the nicest and most helpful manager I could have ever had 💪

Lol first time my senior coworker tried to act as my manager, i gave him the fuck around and find out treatment.
He got humbled real quick, but i guess you can’t give that to your manager 🤣

And pray what is the fuck around and find out treatment?

Well he had a design to do, which had some serious flaws, usually i would have pointed that out but i kept mum, because last time i suggested him he complained to manager saying i was trying to school him.
Later when those flaws came up in staging env, I pointed each failure to design discussion MOM.
Anyone who has read Alex Yu system design would have gone bonkers seeing that design 🤣

Honestly can’t complain since my manager is even younger than me! (Director level; I’m 28 4YOE) 😁
But yeah don’t see why this would make someone insecure since as long as you learn tons from them, and they’re genuinely someone you enjoy working with.
Else therapy or GTFO.

Wow! Don’t you think that’s too young to be that position? Is it a startup? Then I have seen a vice president of marketing/ sale at the age of 25. Giving life lessons to a 45 years old sales manager who is adding great money to their revenue.

Had a co-worker, who I on boarded become my manager. He was the best manager I had till date. He worked harder than most of us in the team, understood team dynamics better than any other manager could, and, was extremely supportive of everyone. There is nothing to worry about as long as promotion was merit based.

Has happened with me multiple times. I can just say that the world is very small, specially the corporate world. And you are always in your zone of career ladder. This shouldn’t affect how you work at all.
- I was new to a particular industry. Even though I had overall 9 YOE, I reported to a fresher who just spent a year in that org. He became my manager within 8 months of me joining the org. He was 10 years younger than me.
- The other person graduated 2 years after me but just because he had spent more time in the org, he was made my manager.
- I am currently reporting to someone who is 3 years younger to me in age as well as YOE.
Frankly speaking, it doesn’t matter to me as long as the other person is insanely rude and downright arrogant. As a matter of fact, I found that these people had some very unique skills and experience which I didn’t and got to learn from them. For me, learning comes first and we are always in our zone.
Also, for the 2nd point, I am at a better position than that person and drawing better salary as well comparatively. So, you never know where you land.

People get promoted for various reasons. Some are fair (good performance, knowledge, experience or specific skills required for the job, etc.) and some aren't so fair (favoritism, etc). I think as far as they are deserving of the promotion you should celebrate their achievements and support them in all possible ways to help them succeed. You should also be aware of the fact that at times they may need to "act like a manager" more than a friendly peer. Again as far as they are not being unfair you should focus on doing the best irrespective of who your manager is.
