What's the difference between a product manager and a program manager?

Imagine you are building a castle. The Product Manager is like the person who decides what kind of castle to build, what color it should be, and what features it should have, like a drawbridge or a tower. They make sure the castle is something people will like and use.

The Program Manager is like the person who makes sure all the different pieces you need to build the castle are in the right place at the right time. They make a plan to get all the pieces you need and make sure everyone who is helping you build the castle knows what to do and when to do it.

the Product Manager decides what to build, and the Program Manager makes sure it gets built the right way, with the right people and materials.

Imo people don't seem to realise PMs decide the features, P0s, pricing and business model

But yeah, that also means a bad PM can be deeply felt

Don't think any of these roles are futile ngl

Company would function better without PMs

SleepyNugget

Not true. EMs would then have to become PMs

Hire devs with customer empathy. They have better product sense than PMs

If we can write a bot which writes P0 in front of some random tasks and adds ASAP to emails, we can basically automate PMs.

Man I like the jokes you’re cracking here but it’s unrealistic. Even google or Facebook have a strong PM culture

As someone who worked in tech marketing i can't believe we are so close to sales teams in this poll...lol. Sales teams bring more value i feel

Regarding pricing, P0s, Business model, why isn't Business teams taking decisions instead of PM team?

SleepyNugget

Because they are downstream from product. Not upstream.

When the business team starts dictating strategy - the tech company is not a tech company anymore

Bad PMs are really bad. Unfortunately, I have never got a good PM.

No care for user experience or having all the requirements without any loopholes. Only focusing on their KPIs of releasing things quickly without thinking if it'll be helpful in future.

They have all the tools but don't even monitor user drop off

Definitely Product Managers. Had they been recruited based on real experience & previous product ownership, they would've been a treat. For now, most are just T1/T2 MBA grads who can neither build nor sell, and just appear charismatic on the surface
