How to Deal with Someone Who Always Needs to Be Right
We’ve all encountered them—the colleague, boss, or friend who refuses to admit they’re wrong. Conversations turn into debates, debates turn into battles, and progress stalls.
So how do you deal with someone who always needs to be right?
Here’s what won’t work: ❌ Arguing with facts—they’ll just double down. ❌ Calling them out directly—ego will override logic. ❌ Expecting them to admit they’re wrong—pride is a powerful force.
Instead, shift the approach: ✅ Frame discussions as experiments, not debates. (“Let’s test this assumption.”) ✅ Use questions to expose contradictions. (“If that’s true, wouldn’t X also be true?”) ✅ Make correctness a shared goal, not a personal win. (“What’s the best decision based on the data?”) ✅ Let them reach the conclusion instead of forcing it on them.
The goal isn’t to prove them wrong—it’s to help them discover better thinking patterns without triggering defensiveness.
If they still resist? Walk away. Some battles aren’t worth fighting.
