Its a good practice to let your manager know that you will be OOO. so that he/she can plan your holiday and distribute your load among other team mates. Thats why asking becomes a need, but yeah if something urgent comes up it needs to be addressed immediately

I dont know why u still believe someone hv to write an approval request , i dont give a damn when i want to take leave , neither i ask for approval , only thing i wirte is i ll be on leave from so and so due to so and so and if they deny though never faced it i simply say i wont be able to work

Leaves are something you earn, i don't think approval should be required on it unless you're the bottleneck for some task or taking a long time off.
