College kids have a reality shock waiting for them
Recently set out to hire interns and had a really strange experience
Went through about 170 CVs. Most were shabbily formatted - which is okay, I understand most people aren’t that serious in college.
But then after shortlisting and setting up interviews:
-
Multiple kids just did not show up for the interview. They did not even write a mail excusing themselves. Or reply to any mail from me about them missing the call.
-
Some of them literally turned up for the call on their phone. They’re mostly well to do, and definitely have laptops. But just casual.
-
This reduced my selection pool to literally 8-9 interns from 180. Of these too, generally saw most of them had too much overconfidence and arrogance about them. Barely went into the depth of the answers, and would over-portray their contribution in past projects/internships, without being able to explain what they really did
I am genuinely shocked and taken aback. These were all Tier 1 college kids, and I just did not expect it to be so bad. A shock for me, and a future shock for many of these kids when they get into the workforce!

It is due to pay I think Tier 1 companies are paying above 1 L per month during internship.

This wasn’t a dev role. Was marketing. Offer was 40k/mo, which was higher than any other internship at the college.

In tier 1 college, 40k/month for internship is lowZ those kids probably didn’t want to sit for the company but the placement committee forced them to, thus they tried to purposely be bad in the interviews, ( i did the same thing in college for company which duped us) i was purposely so bad in the interview that i was laughing internally 😂😂😂. Find colleges where students are eager to join u.

Bhai saab the arrogance they are carrying after solving few leetcodes.
I have stopped communicating with them.

Well , I think that's okay. It's similar to what HRs and recuriters do with these folks. A Balance should be there.

They give one word answers 🤦♀️
Turning down "low paying" roles because doesn't match expectations- which is exorbitant for YOE

Tier 1 college kids usually get 1-4L / mo in internships, I don't know how much CityMall is offering but they probably see their peers getting these high internship offers and when interviewers demand any effort from them for a 20k internship they feel it's not worth it. Also some insider news from IITs, if we get a good offer and we're in the process for another company we're asked to underperform in that interview by the Placement office so y'all would select another candidate who hasn't received any offers.

They don't need money as all are rich, will rather live on their parents' money and will not work for 2-3 lakhs per annum. Previous generation had no option as majority of parents were not that rich.

Yes, they didn;t need the money. But to see the lack in wanting to hustle was painful.

It’s not the money. Don’t take this the wrong way, but somehow you were realistic in your jd and didn’t communicate that they would be changing the world. They want to be coddled into doing basic stuff but get a feeling that they are changing the world that they can brag about. They are far more status oriented than people realize.

The arrogance is still less than the HRs which they show in the office

+1

Tier 1 college students know that there are many recruiters lined up so they don't care if they offend one.
Tier 3 college students think if you're hiring from their college, then there is something wrong with you or your budget, so they don't mind offending you.
HR tries to act like they're doing some kind of favor by giving a job in all places, so Fck HR. I've seen noticeable differences in people speaking with function managers rather than HR.
