Career Dilemma — Need Suggestions

I’m currently working in TCS with 10 years of IT experience, and recently, I got an interesting opportunity from a leading pharma company, for a technical role to drive Digital Transformation in Supply Chain Operations.

Here’s where I’m confused: 🔹 It’s a technical leadership designation (Team Lead), but there won’t be a dedicated development team under me. 🔹 The role involves automation & end-to-end transformation of supply chain processes, but IT isn’t the company’s core focus. 🔹 I’ll be reporting to a senior person responsible for solution design, and I’ll primarily handle execution. 🔹 Pharma company follows alternate Saturday working, while I currently enjoy a 5-day work week.

I’m torn between stability & long-term IT growth in pure IT industry vs. a new challenge where I can gain domain exposure in pharma & supply chain digitalization.

Some of my questions: 💡 Will moving from a full-fledged IT services company to a pharma company’s IT division affect my future prospects in IT? 💡 Is the trade-off worth it if there’s a significant salary hike? 💡 How valuable is this role for long-term career growth, considering the focus is on digital transformation rather than hands-on development?

I’d love to hear from you guys — especially those who’ve made domain shifts or worked on digital transformation projects in non-IT organizations.

Your insights will really help me make an informed decision. 🙏

Switch to another job bro. Also, rely a bit less on ChatGPT (more of a robotic post rather than own feelings)

True but used chatgpt to explain my situation in one shot instead of having convo in comments, i guess that's why someone build an AI to used when needed!!

Don't accept, a NBFC or Bank will be best option when moving away from pure Tech company

I work in a pharma company which is remote based and I get around 29lpa with 4 YEO . Meanwhile my brother in law works in citi bank earning the same with 8 YEO.
So if you want money go for whichever pays you .
Pharma is niche as well

Three questions.

  1. why have you stayed in TCS for ten years???
  2. what stability are you referring to in TCS?
  3. pharma’s IT sector will slightly impact your hire ability but it is still going to be a lot better than what TCS would offer

Ps- Have more experience in IT and worked in TCS for a few years and have moved away from TCS happily.

10 yoe does not meant in the tcs only, tcs is third company in my career.

Stability is to being in core IT service company switching will be easy compared to non it.

Agree and that's why I needed suggestions to finalize the decision it's a tough call in the current market

If the pharma offer comes with a significant salary hike, then it can be worth the trade-off — but only if you’re also getting exposure to end-to-end solutioning, not just execution. Pure execution with no ownership might hurt long-term growth.

For long-term career value — digital transformation roles are strong, but make sure you’re not stuck only as a “support executor.” Try to push for decision-making, tool adoption, and process ownership. That way, you’ll be positioned as someone who drives transformation, not just delivers tasks.

So, if you want stability + broad IT growth, stick to IT services. If you want domain expertise + transformation exposure (with better pay), the pharma role can be a good bet.

Also, an unsolicited advice to @UnpaidIntern
I prefer opening the app to discuss about careers related topics and accidentally come across personal topics anyday compared to opening up the app for personal topics and then flooded with guys searching for relationships and stuff.

Maybe time for you to seriously consider/moderate the posts?

  1. What was in the job description?

  2. Do they want you to lead architecture design, AI based automation? For supply chain digital automation, I believe it will still be tech but heavily loaded with business understanding which can be a plus in future supply chain jobs or pharma jobs or digital transformation jobs

  1. No it won't. In fact you would be seen as a Tech + Industry SME. Usually pharma companies come with very good work culture, so take a good informed decision.
  2. Yes, it is. But personally I would want to keep my Saturdays free. However, the learning would be steep and valuable so that's the trade off.
  3. Digital transformation is happening everywhere and will continue to happen. You can keep abreast of technology by picking up tasks which keep you involved (in addition to what your role requires) if that's a concern. No one is said no if they want to work on something they are passionate about.

It's YOU who will shape your career in the desired direction, not the other way round. And yes, I am someone who moved from consulting to industry to product management to start up and back to consulting. So speaking from experience.
