On recent trip, the aisle seat guy had Graphs on his phone, was vigorously making notes on his notebook, while also reading the book 'You Can Heal Your Life' by Louise Hay

It's just sad sad state.

VS code/code editors, dark theme & few pieces of lines--> this showoff is f*ing cringe. I mean, who in 2024 takes CS engineers seriously? The era of showoff is soon going to be over.
People who ship actual product don't have time to show this cring on social media. It's the mids who tend to show off.

Who are actually shippers?

Don't get it, it's reasonably quiet, you don't have internet, distraction are low. If I'm bored and wish to work, Why can't I?

Next you gonna say every person with book/kindle in hand in public is just trying to show off

CosmicLlama
CosmicLlama

True . How is reading a book ok but doing something on the laptop is not ok?. Even if he/she does it for show off, it's is as same as reading the book.

BS take* Why can’t someone finish some chores (including coding something) in a 3hr+ flight?
I generally make some docs available offline just before plane takes off and I read them, plus I write new docs too. Like, why would I not if Iv nothing else to do and nowhere to go in a flying capsule at 36k feet 🤷🏽‍♂️

PerkyWalrus

Why not just sleep? Are you having good sleep that's required of your age which makes not required to sleep in flight?

MagicalNugget
MagicalNugget

Oh yea. Its either sleep or some work ^ for me. And generally speaking I don’t sleep much in flights (unless they are some tough to catch <9am flights, then yess 😴)

Don’t get it wrong but sometimes we have to do that, I had done once I have downloaded few db records so that I can debug and fix issue in plane. I didn’t wanted to do but I had to do. As soon as I landed committed and deployed my fixes 🙂. It wasn’t show off actually.

Oh. I have a good one. I was travelling from Chennai to Bengaluru once, in the early morning train. The double decker one.
There was a guy sitting next to me. 25 to 30 mins into the journey, where every aunty and uncle started unpacking their food, this guy took out his laptop and he started coding. On a Sunday morning.
I found out that he worked for Glance(the logo that's displayed on the top left corner in your slack desktop :P ) Next day I found that glance had laid off 75 people. I really hope our hero's job was secure. 🥲

While flying to onsite for client meetings, I read up on some of the briefing documents during the flight and take notes to prepare for the meetings. So it is possible to get some work done during flights, but I've never tried writing code during a flight. 😅
