Another job hunt heartbreak - advice pls
What does it mean if the hiring manager tells you verbally that you're in and then later tells you that they'll have to interview 2-3 more candidates? Does this mean I'm out?
Can mean several things, out seems some of the more unlikely options. Maybe they have internal rules of X candidates screened before closing on one, maybe the position is on hold, maybe budgetary constraints, so many things. Out hota to he'd be more candid. It well could be them marinating you before a lowball offer so you'll be easier to break down. Right now prep for the worst hope for the best, ek followup daaldena within a week.

Especially if it’s a large company they have a threshold to cross
This happened to me. I got the job immediately on the day I went to take the interview. They were very eager to hire me. But due to some family issues, I wasn't able to join immediately, and I told them beforehand.
10 days later, while doing all the BG verification process, they made excuses like the referred person isn't picking up the phone, delaying by saying its in verification. After some days, I lost my patience and asked wtf is going on. And I just moved on from there.
So they never told you what happened?
They said they were interviewing some other candidates. In the meantime, I found another job in a better company.
Yes but it went from we'll roll out the offer this week to you will hear back in 2-3 weeks. Itna 180 degree backtrack is worrying me
It means that you're good but they're shopping to see if they find someone better/a better deal. You can take your chances or ask them to make a decision now since you've cleared the rounds and to be respectful of your time and hint that you want to make a decision soon. Be polite. It's an employer's market, they're spoilt for choice, they'll keep you hanging if they think you're gonna wait around.
