Responsibilities of Staff engineer?

What is the usual expectation from a staff engg in your company or org? I’ve seen folks at higher levels in my company being relegated to just system design, non functional requirements and managing people from tech side. My concern is losing touch with hands on coding. Is it true everywhere?

Staff engineers are the earliest technical leaders so losing some amount of hands-on coding does make sense. Your impact will be via maximising the amount of quality technical output of your team (also influencing other teams' a bit). Coding would still be there but not as much as L4 or L5.

Why are project managers paid less?

I am honestly just furious at the pay difference between the salary of an sde and a pm. Both work just as hard.
