My friend recently shared his experience interviewing for a Software Engineer role in NLP. Like any normal tech interview, it started with the usual suspects - data structures, machine learning, system design. He cleared three technical rounds smoothly and was feeling pretty confident. But just when he thought the hard part was over, they told him there was one final round: the Kannada round. He was confused. "Kannada round?" They asked him to speak in Kannada, write a few words, and even explain their meaning like he was teaching a machine. At one point, he had to describe the word “neeru” (water) using NLP concepts. He said he felt like he was doing language modeling in a Kannada grammar class. Suddenly, it wasn’t about code anymore - it was about his command over his mother tongue. He joked that instead of Natural Language Processing, it felt like Native Language Processing. From debugging algorithms to debugging Kannada sentence structure, the shift was real. Apparently, the role was strictly for Kannada-speaking engineers. Now he’s revising PyTorch alongside Kannada textbooks, just in case.
