- Researchers in Kansai, including Kitano Hospital and Kyoto University Hospital, will start clinical trials next month for a medicine to grow teeth. - The trials will first test the drug on adult men who have lost back teeth, then on children with congenital anodontia. - About 1 in 100 people suffer from congenital anodontia, and there is no fundamental treatment for it currently. - The drug inhibits the protein USAG-1, which suppresses tooth growth, and has shown success in mice and dogs. - Clinical trials will run through August next year, with the aim to make the treatment practical by 2030.
