Surviving vs Thriving
They say, “Money can’t buy happiness,” but let’s be honest—money can buy a home in Kolkata, and that’s pretty close to happiness! Here I am, 13 years still into my first company, earning 25 LPA (Wife is a homemaker btw), and comfortably living in my own home, with my entire daily commute costing me ₹80. Meanwhile, my friends in Bengaluru are paying ₹80 just to step out of their apartments. Every time I visit Bengaluru, I feel like I’ve entered a parallel universe. A ₹25,000 rent there gets you a “spacious” 1BHK (where “spacious” means you can stretch both hands without hitting the walls). Meanwhile, my Kolkata house has enough room for a cricket match in the living room. Then there's the food situation. Here, I can get a proper meal for ₹100, but in Bengaluru, that’s just the GST on a dosa. And don’t even get me started on kids' school fees. In Kolkata, parents complain if the fees cross ₹1 lakh a year. In Bengaluru, ₹1 lakh is what you pay just for the school bus! But the real question is: how are they surviving on salaries similar to mine? My theories: 1. They have secret second jobs – maybe as Uber drivers after office hours. 2. They live in shared apartments – seven software engineers, one mattress, and an air fryer. 3. They are all secretly funded by venture capitalists – because let’s face it, the cost of living there needs an investment round. Despite all this, I respect my Bengaluru friends. They navigate traffic like trained warriors, survive skyrocketing rents, and still have the energy to post café photos on Instagram. Meanwhile, I sit comfortably in my affordable Kolkata home, sipping cha, and wondering if I should ever move. (Spoiler alert: Probably not.)
