Retailers too do this right? They pitch you a similar product that costs less or better in quality because they get special dealer benefits from the brands. A very common practice in FMCG/FMCD industry.

Due to the lack of trackability on-ground there are Mystery Shopping audits conducted by brands where they send a third-party to go shop where their specific prouducts are placed to see whether the retailer suggests their product or not.

Now Zepto is using this real world thing online in a similar way. If they get extra money out of this it shouldn't be a problem I guess.

Go to any offline electronics store and shopkeeper would suggest you a vivo phone cause he gets bigger commission there, or a Lloyd AC over what you came asking for..

But here bru can clearly see the shady practice, idk if there's any grounds for suing here 🤷🏻‍♀️

I dunno how the law works when it comes to eCommerce, but a retailer can surely promote whatever brand he wants over the other because it's a free-market economy. The whole reason why dealers get so much incentives and abroad trips from brands.

How is this a dark pattern? I agree that Zepto is sus sometimes in terms of hiding the hidden charges, etc. But it doesn't mean every feature is illegal.

You do realise the ranking of these feeds on ecom apps have slots for Ads as well right? So is it illegal now for sellers to pay certain amount to get higher view share.

This is how it works. Seller with the best deal wins the buybox.

This reminds me of a video from Varun Mayya that he uploaded 2 days ago - Why sillicon valley is so successful. And the major difference he mentions is that people in India don't trust anything new you do. The society is so sceptical and demotivates entrepreneurs every new idea at first. Classic example you just gave here.

I think @CryingPan is talking about dark patterns, there is nothing to be sceptical or demotivating about Zepto being quick commerce company but usage of dark patterns make sells without awareness of users and profitable to companies, in the long term it created trust issues.

How is this legal?

I have never bought the chings masala yet zepto is suggesting that to me to buy again. Same UX for my friend as well.

What are some of the worst dark patterns you've seen?

I will go first- sneaking in membership fees while making a purchase; urban company recently got some flak for it.

Zepto weird (smart) UX

So zepto has a 'Remove' delivery button inside the bill details. This is a very smart way to make money, since this button is situated inside the details part. But on the other hand it feels a bit weird, if I miss opening the details I m...

OMFG Zepto’s Horrible Design Patterns Just Won’t Stop!

Already notorious for the likes of asking subscribers to “Apply” free delivery benefits for each eligible order, they’ve gone even further. Now if an order is running late, they just stop showing the status information and instead throw...
