ZA vs Fintech Startup Which job should I take?

I have 2 job offers currently.

ZS: (known among pharma and consulting clients)

Salary:

9.34 lacs (base+meal+internet) 85k performance bonus

Role: Business Technology Solutions Associate

Other than that they offer joining and retention bonus. But I am not considering them as they take that back if I leave earlier than 12 and 20 months respectively.

Fintech Startup: (known startup among banks)

Salary:

8.55 lacs (base) 95k performance bonus

No joining or retention bonus here.

Role: SDE-1

I want to be a full time traveller in the future earning from freelancing gigs and passive income in the future. Which job should I take right now?

Both are very different roles. I have worked at ZS, its a consulting and tech role which can have 60-70% business consulting so you will get exposure to really good business problems. Only in pharma sector though.

SDE-1 at Fintech, pure tech play and 2-3 yrs of investment in a role can lead you to get upto 30-40 lpa. Fintech is very rewarding, this is basis the career progression of my batchmates. Just don’t go for companies like fampay or the likes.

How well funded is the FinTech startup? Because if it isn’t well funded, there’s a huge risk associated with it. Also, since it is a startup try to understand how profitable the company is at the moment, as well as where the company aims to be in the next five years. And if you’re thinking of joining the startup, always ask for ESOPS. That way, you can sell them at a later stage and get extra money. The downside is that you have to wait at least 2 years before they vest.

In conclusion, if the startup is well funded, has a great growth trajectory, and offers you ESOPS, it’s a better win. You’ll end up earning more.
