You can't get a mid-cycle salary hike?
I put down my papers recently due to some compensation-related concerns. My manager tried to retain me stating he'll give me a hike but won't be possible to do it mid-cycle. Is that really a thing, where you can be promoted/given hike mid-cycle? I'm having a hard time believing this as it is unheard of for me. Besides, I don't think I want to wait 2-3 months before it kicks in.

Remember this : if they really cared for you, they would have paid you fair to begin with.
You put down your papers because of the whole scenario, not just money.
Them retaining you won’t change anything else. All you will do by saying yes to retention is :
- reduce your respect in their eyes
- prevent them from having short term pain of replacing you - which they will eventually now that they know your “loyalty”
- you will lose any other offer you have in hand - most companies don’t allow re-resignation for 6 months after withdrawal
- THEY STILL HAVEN’T INCREASED YOUR COMPENSATION, only made a PROMISE to do so in the future 😂
Leave and go where you are valued. Remember : companies have more budget for new hires than for internal hikes.

That sounds fair. Although, I'm really weighing my options here - don't want to compromise what I've built in my time here

All these are fake promises by managers. Anything is possible, you can see negotiations for new hires, HR will raise their comp within a day to ensure that they join. If they can't raise your salary and give a fresh offer before your last working day, trust me you ain't getting it after you stay back.
