Would you stay in a thankless job?

Suppose you joined your dream company or just a company that ticks all your boxes. But slowly you find out that the people and culture is not right. You keep finding yourself in situations where your efforts are not appreciated and you’re only told what more is expected. You are made to believe that your skills are not enough for your title. Now would you be able to stay in such a place? Basically where your direct leaders lack empathy. Keep in mind, continuing to work here would just feel draining to you and you’ll keep getting stressed. Have you been in such a situation? What helped or was exiting the only option?

I am in this situation right now, to add to this. They have signed a bond with me that if I don’t stay for three years I have to pay 25lakhs

Check reddit legal about this. I think it is not binding in some cases

It is binding. They have my degrees and documents

No such thing as a dream company now. Its all nightmare. Amazon was a DC for me. Fucking crazy. Leave asap if its killing you, nothings worth mental health

Yup, on paper and for folks outside it is shiny but inside it’s your luck whether you are among right ppl

What's your take on Amazon after getting into your dream company?

I figured out after my appraisal cycle that the management is just a bunch of idiots who don't give a shit about the work or contributions you make. Tried talking to them but in vain. Simply packed and left

FluffyNugget

Yes, I am not seeing any hacks or way around this. Either exit or get fired for not doing enough

I was in a similar situation 3 years ago.. and I left after 10 months. I had a 2 year bond and paid a crazy sum of money to leave. But now I feel it's all worth it, nothing beats mental peace

🙏 looks to be the only right call. Gives me hope it’ll turn out better

Ik… it’s not a lot…but after working for 4 yrs in corporate I have realised that no company is actually a dream company. It’s basically a space/ perks/ tag that makes us think that ohhh myyy…now that’s my dream company…

But yes to answer your question... Please leave the job if you are not getting recognition for the work you do. As soon as you start respecting yourself, you gonna get better opportunities.

Yup. Recognition is the last thing I would expect here. I just don’t want them to say as if I have not put in any efforts. Or whatever I did was not worth anything even though they have full view of what I am going to do. It’s like they have a vision of 10x dev and I don’t fit that. I mean if I was that, I would be in big tech.

Dear, Let me share my 2 cents on this topic, first these problems I have seen with 4 categories of people, #1 freshers out of college,#2 seniors about 10yrs in IT in top product companies ,#3 toxic managers who truly lack empathy #4 toxic employees who take advantage of empathy . While only #3 is a manager issue, all other 3 categories are employee self created issue not aligned to his authorities to skip work or show rouge character in the team. It's a psychological and behavioral problem from an employee. Work culture starts with some employees and expands to others not always top down.so if it's becoming toxic identify that rotten tomato and report (many times I see this never happens from team members - lack of courage) , so if I am in your case, see if this is happening with you or with everyone else, if that manager is the problem discuss and explain why you think so (understand it's your issue at reception not his issue) and explain in detail and say something like you want to change team and approach HR. If you still see no progress, change the company. But, if the issue is found in you, that created because of your past experiences or unknowingly you are taking advantage of team empathy, then work on your self because the problem carries with you any company you go to,not the company manager/leadership issue. Sharing this as a person who has been on both sides.hope it will be helpful.

Totally get your points. In my case problem is from top down. Not just my direct manager. Only ppl sticking around are old timers or those who have something tying them to this job (loan, personal situation). And since I get your point, I validated this with ppl who left (skilled folks). They agree it’s just the way things work and top down there is lack of empathy.

If that's the case don't even waste energy on HR and talks simply flee from that place and look for another company with the help of previous ppl who left and are happy now. Workplace happiness is tied to ppl we directly work with on a day to day basis, so follow them and ask for a referral if their new workplace is good. I know one solution doesn't fit for all. But all the best in your search, don't drain yourself and get health issues and unnecessary arguments with management in proving who is right.

I sympathize with your situation. I am in a similar situation. In my case it's due to discrimination as I have a different religious background. My colleagues who have far less accomplishments and visibility get shoutouts and recognition all the time while they ignore me as I am less human.

😓 and sadly these people will remain as company will never see a problem from their level

Even i am stuck in similar Situation. Knowing the market conditions what is the best thing we can do here? Do we have to stay in same org until we find new job or resign and search for a new job?

Ideal would be to quit once you get another offer. But if you’re kept to occupied with current job just to survive then I think one day you’ll just have to call quit and believe in yourself to get another opportunity. I mean that’s what I think it’ll lead to

I would stay in such a job if the pay is above ₹ 50 lpa

FluffyNugget

I mean if you’re that capable to fetch such a salary, you would leave first thing.

BubblyDonut

Practically, that is what happens majorly. People don't get appreciation which they deserve or whatso ever because its subjective wrt to your supervisor. Make it objective and try to highlight yourself by documenting. You can't do much in these cases otherwise. You need to have a thick skin upto a certain limit. However these things should not be drain you that much. If it does you can switch the company.

Ya I think what you mean and in those cases I am fine. Tbh not looking for praise. But the kind of things said are like you’ve contributed nothing or at least not at the level of your title. Think like your work being compared to intern stuff. It’s just demotivating and making you question yourself
