Would you leave India if you could?

Let's say you're given an opportunity to leave India and settle abroad. Would you go ahead and do it, assuming you won't be able to shift back for at least 20-30 years if at all?

Can share reasoning in comments as to why/why not.

Yes, this country sucks

Why would anyone want to settle over here in india? When you are paying higher taxes but getting nothing in return. In my case, I don't have even have good relationship with my cousins and other family members. Racism might be factor the which need to think before moving abroad.

I don't completely agree with the "tax doesn't get us anything in India".

Tier 1 and 2 cities in India have decent infrastructure and roads, powercuts have reduced, security has improved (slightly, but still long way to go), good fibre internet and 4g/5g network options etc. It will take time to penetrate tier 3 and beyond but we're getting there slowly and surely.

With the same tax you get 2x benifits in abroad

I still remember the last lecture my HOD gave, he finished off saying India is in a bad political system, justice is where the money is, higher ups and big position holders are caring more about their ego and their personal ideologies and they try to push it to our mind. Better leave off to another country.

ZippyMochi

Should have asked the hod if they actually lived in a different country. Most countries are similar, you just don't see it because you're not there. Ask any local from a country and you'll know.

Context: The number of Indians giving up citizenship and going abroad is at record highs. Brain drain is hurting our chance to flourish as a country, but poor governance and many other issues force a lot of people to leave.

I as a startup owner would definitely leave India simply because of the toxic and shitty VC ecosystem and corruption here. Much easier to raise funds abroad and live a life of dignity and peace.

Used to be a patriot who wanted to stay and work here itself, but now I seriously doubt if it's worth it.

Come back to grapevine when you raise funds in Europe. Oil money or petrodollars are unnatural ease of sourcing money, will die soon like "ease of doing business in Europe". India, unfortunately, doesn't have access to or control over oil or petrodollars.

ZippyMochi
ZippyMochi

India is getting discounted oil from Russia ever since Ukraine invasion and sanctions happened. Even if India doesn't have a lot of oil reserves, it still has enough refineries and still is selling that refined oil to EU and others. They've started cutting back on it now but they're not going to stop anytime soon. EU needs India and Russia as much as we need them.

Considering that Grapevine maybe a good representation of India's cream, these results dont go very well with the 'India's decade' narrative. Maybe someone tell Modiji to stop paying attention to the global ass lickers who want to increase their India revenue and suck us dry.

ZippyMochi
ZippyMochi

That narrative is for the semi rural/rural folks mostly, not really urban folks. They can mostly see through the bs, but they've also been brainwashed to a great extent of late.

Reasons which are beyond repair to stay in this country:

  1. Corruption in day to day life. If something bad happens to me or my family I have to wait till eternity to get justice.
  2. No respect for laws. 3 ) Feudal mentality of some caste especially in North India
  3. Shitty Infrastructure. No value of persons life. 5 ) Over population. Can't enjoy driving, holidays, serenity.
  4. Everyone hates everyone. Jealousy and comparing with others.

Why are the poll options such extremes? I love the people and food and so many things here. But I do wanna move out of the country for a better life. You make it seem like if I am moving I believe this country sucks!

ZippyMochi
ZippyMochi

You have to on some level 🤷🏻‍♂️ If it didn't suck you'd stay

That's a perfectionism mindset. I don't believe it. It's like saying hey I am switching jobs for better pay, and since I chose the new company, old one sucks? Not really! Our country doesn't suck and I don't want people thinking it does. Yes sure, some elements, some things suck for some people, but that's not something that exists only in this country. Problems are everywhere. All I want to say is, people wish to go to different country not bcoz India Sucks but bcoz the other country is in some way better than here

Depends what’s your priority is in life right now. If you have seen growth in your career, monetary and otherwise and you have been able to amass a significant amount of wealth while doing it. Then moving abroad is the best thing you can do.

You will still be paying taxes ( more this times ~10-15% more). But you would be getting all the services you would be paying for. Apart from that better quality of life. Air,water etc. In general you will get the cliched “better standard of living”

If you are in the early stage of your career, easier to stay here and keep up the hustle culture. You will have better chances of seeing significant growth quickly if you are making the right choices. And at some point you will move to the above category where you can start thinking of moving abroad.

ZippyMochi
ZippyMochi

Interesting point, but it's contrary to why most people leave India in the first place. If you're rich enough in India then tier 1/2 city standard of living is actually pretty comparable to other countries that are better off than us. Plus the perks of being influential in your home ground, which would be difficult in a new country.

Money lets people live in comfy bubbles no matter which country it is. You can buy a better standard of living almost anywhere.

Early stage career folks leave India to hustle and grow faster, not the other way round imo.

DizzyJellybean
DizzyJellybean

No the point is, when you are rich and can afford all the services related to health, education etc. You are technically double spending for these services. First in form of taxes and other from your personal wealth. Which is the main reason why people tend to move out of India. Because taxation won’t increase a lot (if you are already inside the higher tax bracket) and by moving out, your double spending decreases considerably.

PrancingUnicorn

You get peanuts when you pay taxes, all is gobbled up by these 10th pass ugly looking MLA and MP who are just angootha chaap chaps. This country is being run by these goons with their ass sitting in their govt aided SUVs and just bull shitting around, these morons then take appointments when a common man has to visit.

ZippyMochi
ZippyMochi

I don't agree, many of India's best politicians and even freedom fighters didn't complete their education. Doesn't mean they don't know the basics of running a country or don't have common sense.

Yes, many of them are criminals but it's the common people who elect these criminals in the first place. What does that say about us and our priorities?
