Working in corporate feels overrated.
Sure, the pay is better, and the LinkedIn Flex is better, but there’s barely any ownership.
I interned at a big-name consumer tech company (Media/OTT) in their product team—worked on discovery & personalization, automated reports, ran analyses, and even helped brainstorm a new retention metric. But honestly? I still felt boxed in.
Every little change needed approvals from multiple stakeholders. Even experimenting with a low-priority, non-live page meant jumping through hoops.
Meanwhile, at an early-stage startup, I had full ownership—shaping user experience, running production verticals, and making real decisions. Probably a big reason we hit early PMF and scaled to EBITDA-positive.
Both have their trade-offs, no doubt. But early in your career? Having that freedom and hands-on experience feels way more valuable.
