Will you encourage and support your kids to get into pro sports?

When I was growing up, sports / games were a hobby and always came second or third to academics. Had neither the means nor the exposure to pursue a sport seriously. Come 9th / 10th had to give up on sports and focus on acads. The acads focus did not stop since then.

I think sports accelerates a human being’s mental/ physical health greatly. People who have kids or are planning to have kids, will you let / encourage your kids focus on sports even if it comes at the expense of acads?

Olympic medal tally is directly and strongly correlated to wealth. People on GV are privileged vs the avg India. Curious to understand how we think about this.

Of course, my kid can train to be a star
sports will not bring money. So no, acads / jobs priority
Depends on how good the kid is
Want to support, but not sure if corruption in selections

Not because it's the olympics, I think putting our kids into sports will help our country become more disciplined and health conscious as a whole. With a population like ours, if we encourage kids who want to do sports, we're preventing them from being an average person doing drudgery with millions to overcoming millions and becoming a star. Wouldn't encourage cricket though, probably a less popular sport that occurs in the olympics

+1 discipline and sports have such a strong correlation

Truly agree with the view here. Sports is generally one big piece of the puzzle missing from India. Very few people actually play

Why?

Always ! Its a myth that academics and extracurriculars can not go hand-in-hand.

Having a Hobby is crucial. And if they are really adept at it, If they make it to nationals, I would be so fcking proud !

My daughter plays football. And she is a good player. But from past 2 years, she isn’t getting selected into school team. Because coach selects only the kids who attend his coaching 🤓 When corruption starts at this level, how can we expect sports to grow in India and bring us glory? Likewise, how can a parent be confident that choosing sports is a good path for their kid’s future?

Your scenario is a huuge problem! Is she getting coaching from anywhere else? Have you reached out to any other parents who are in the same boat as you for solutions?

Yeah, she trains with an academy outside of school. I did talk to other parents in school, but no one wants to spend time and energy on things related to sport 🙈 if it was any subject, people would have gathered and dealt with it.

Olympic year: "India needs to invest more in sport! Make sports mandatory for kids!! Govt listen up!!!"

Other three years: "Waste of time. Start FITTJII from KG-II or you won't get IIT Patna CS. Grind Leetcode Hard because gymnastics won't get you 5LPM+ESOPs."

It seems like that,I agree. But most people do this because that's what they see majority doing. This Olympics we have definitely come far compared to the others, so a change is not far away I think. I don't think the new generation of parents wants their kids to do engineering/medicine as much as their parents did.

Corruption is a great point you added. Actually is not clear what the roadmap is, to get a kid to becoming great at sports

How intentional should it be, how much should you force them, which sport to pick etc.

Very curious to hear if there are parents here who have kids who play sports actively

Sports builds character.

I see a lot my peers who were more active in their childhood and they are effortlessly fitter than me.

I encourage my children towards sports, I know how important health is. My first priority is health.

Learning is a life long process, so I am still a student at 40

To be honest, I would want my kids in sports because it will teach them a lot of organization behaviour, strategy and grit, which is much more required than a lot of current syllabi.

However, there is a method, and not every child is an Olympic medallist. There are stars, there are geniuses, and there are people who do for the love of it.

@Toph56 isn't it difficult to control yourself from having a kid once you are married. I mean one kid might happen by mistake only.

Well it’s a life choice. 😛

Bro but still how married people literally control that? Honestly asking (for a friend).
