Why this decline?
Is this happening because of all bhaiya and didi’s of youtube? IIT’s are not only for getting jobs.
Because many of the top rankers now go to abroad for undergrad.
This is the reason. An acquaintance got admitted to University of Toronto UG in CS along with scholarship. The amount of money he'll be pouring rivals but not surpasses top Indian private ones. Except, he did better targeted preparation for profiling rather than slogging aimlessly for JEE.
Data seems to be incorrect, Atleast These closing ranks are not for general category for sure. They might be including candidates of general female or other types as well. And how exactly is the decline after 2018?
It indeed have taken consideration of general female. General females were given reservation since 2018. That is why the drop in 1 year. People quickly jump into conclusions, eh.
The decline between 2017 and 2018 is because the government mandated addition of 20 percent seats for female students, this led to drop in closing ranks as these seats could only be filled by female students.
After that?
Female reserved seats are there only. and you can see it actually is getting better. From 2018 to 2023, IIT Bom 313 to 291 , IIT madras 690 to 479 Kanpur 919 to 610
Seats have increased?
No
But they might have increased for other tier 1s like Bits/top nits/IIITs
Probably more students are now opting for other tier-1 colleges like BITS/top NITs/top IIITs.
These are definitely better than 2nd and 3rd gen IITs.

I think another point could be that students have realised they do not need to sacrifice college for branch. They could go to a better IIT and take a less desirable branch and do LC and get a good coding job anyways 😅 Many of my IITian friends irrespective of their branch are either SDEs or Data Scientists. If they can do it others can too
Curious to see data before 2017 as that was the year when they removed the JEE main rank calculation basis board results, so I think more people would give both main and advance in 2017
It because introduction of female reservation. And the closing rank in this data is of general(both male and female)
