Why is Kolkata not a Tech/Startup hub?

Decent food, accepting people, great talent, but barely any companies get started here. The ones that do move out after hitting some scale. I have heard that most people just don't wanna move here so it gets difficult to hire talent.

P.S. I'm trying to work on an idea in the offline payments space from Kolkata (trying to help brands and their distributors get paid faster) and it would be great to connect with relevant people.

I think you're conflating Bengal in general with the city Kolkata. The usual problems you read about are not as bad in my opinion.

Kolkata is the capita of Bengal. It may or may not have same issuees as other areas but it has to face consequences. After all, it is also part of Bengal. And it doesn't have privilege like Noida.

A City doesn't become an overnight tech hub . Blr and Hyderabad made it easy for the companies during early 2000s to setup their offices meanwhile Kolkata was ruled by communists who opposed it

Kolkata has largely stagnated as a city since the 80s. So less economic activity and fewer jobs, fewer investors, poor weather, not exactly a cosmopolitan city. These make it unattractive as a startup hub. Not sure why anyone will setup in Kolkata unless they live there. Eventually you need either employees, investors or users (if not all) to be in the city you’re based in.

That’s why it’s easier to setup in ncr, Mumbai, bangalore or even hyderabad. Having lived in all 5 cities, bangalore is the best bet

You're pretty spot on. I was born and raised here and it's convenient to start off here (try and test stuff essentially). Still pretty surprising that the number is so low. The msme sector and traditional businesses do pretty well here but those are also quite old.

Peak appeasement of illegals. I think we should get the good ones out & barricade it. It's already becoming a mini Bangladesh.

Personal opinion, don't thrash me for it - but I have always found the city a little too laid back.
A bit lazy, maybe.
