Why do people work more than work hours without getting paid for extra hours? Why do people encourage and help promote these kind of culture

I don’t understand why does this happen and then people have to cry about work life balance. System is designed to extract maximum work out of a resource here in India. Why do even people contribute to this culture? Why do people forget about their rights? I know many things can will happen when opposed by showing that not reaching targets by the opposite party that maybe your manager/stakeholder/team lead/colleagues/PMs, why not negotiate/ say NO strictly to extra work without getting paid for that ? Sometimes when the work env is toxic, and negotiation is not an option, things happen like pressurizing, humiliating the person in calls, asking for lots of justification, cornering that person by influencing others with power and politics, bullying,gossips, etc. It’s understandable that people have family responsibilities and bills to pay, but why bow down to what’s rightfully not just.

These type of culture is increasing in many places and people are forgetting about their rights. What to do and how to handle these types of situations ?
