Why do companies have an Appraisal process? (Honest & serious replies only)
I am trying to wrap my head around why exactly do companies have an Appraisal system in place. What exactly do top management try to achieve through this exercise. Answer with seriousness, I am trying to understand this from company's perspective.

To remind people, they control our lives. And of course to give some semblance of doing something to the otherwise useless life of a HR.

This is not a joke. , but a serious answer. Most of the time, the feedback from the manger is immediate. meaning, we make a mistake, the asshole would crib like we sold out nuclear codes to a terrorist. SO the year end " feed back" has absolutely no value. if you are in sales/ BD Targets ae measured every quarter. If you are part of any other value chain, where targets are measurable, they are captured clearly. Managers decide on promotion/hikes based on every parameter except delivery. Sometimes it is to retain people, sometimes is favoritism, some times its pure politics.
So the year end appraisal process is just a soft threat to the employee. and/or for the HR to look busy in the otherwise off season of no festivals.
