Why did we normalise drinking?
Joined a new org which is completely remote. Went to 3 offsites in 3 months. No matter which city you are in, every day ends with a drinks dinner. One day it's with team members, Next day it's managers treat, Then it's a company organized booze show. And just pick some other reasons for the next two days.
I'm not getting into the moral factor of if you should drink or not. But it's unhealthy for sure. Every once in a while is accepted. But the corporates have made it a habit to enslave employees. And people don't even bother to join for any outing if drinks isn't included. How did we reach here?

It’s your choice. You can pretend that you’re drinking. Just take one peg and keep at your table until the party is over. One peg you can manage I guess. It’s corporate world. Here showing is more important than actual work.

Pretending is stupid and weak. People will respect you more if you are truthful, not if you are a pussy.

A lot of people love this kind of a culture. Just saying. xD

Almost 95% from my personal experience. But this brings a vibe imbalance within the team. The default hangout spots are always the one with drinks. No going out to see places or to play something or explore different cuisines. It's always "Let's go to some nice place with drink". That's where it starts hurting everyone.

@UnpaidIntern are you getting free booze from your manager?

Just draw the line. Say you don't drink, and stick to it. Only if you have a wavering morality or are a punching bag you would yield.
Getting addicted to booze is also a strategy by companies - impaired judgement leads to revealing and easier influencing, employees start expecting booze and think less about moving out, and later exclusivity is used for driving.

Me too. I don't understand drinking at all or smoking. I mean it's their choice but why🥲

And why is corporate promoting it?

Lack of wisdom and self confidence. Many people start drinking because there friends or parents do.

Many people do it under peer pressure and to just 'fit in'. Instead, people should work on improving their people skills. This will also help keep fake people away.
Also, stay away from people who judge you for being a teetotaller and force you to drink. They are one of the most superficial people. 🤦🏻♀️

I had a client meeting, my indian manager kept asking me to drink, i completely refused to drink saying, as a Hindu, I am not supposed to drink, both my client and my Manager's manager appreciated this, but I don't think my manager liked it 😂, but everything's good. The key is to deny with respect.

PS: my client was american and appreciated for standing for my identity

i want to add another perspective. As a woman, it's feels unsafe to drink in such settings. But since i dont join them and dont get invited either, i feel excluded from the team. not to mention i am the only woman in a team of 12 people.
will it be safe for me to be included in such a plan?
