I’m responsible for not upskilling and not bringing any value to the company for what they’re paying for me. Hence I’m laid off. It’s better to admit one mistakes than blaming it on someone else 🤷‍♂️

Great introspection, may in your case. In most of the cases it wasn’t performing issue. Chill 😎

U don't need to upskill for what they're paying you. You are just paid to do the job and not to upskill yourself regarding whatever skill. If you are not even meeting the bare minimum of what work is to be delivered , it is your fault or else it is the company's fault.

Employees who think employment at a company "at will" is a fundamental right 😏

Once you got laid off, the best course of action is to take it down in a gulp and start interviewing again. There is no need to blame anyone or any entity, because you definitely won't be gaining anything there.

  1. Blaming your manager will be like burning the bridges. Instead, if you maintain a good rapport, they can help you by getting you referrals. I got a referral from my manager and it is almost in the about to give an offer stage, right within a month.

  2. Blaming a CXO also won't get you anything, but also you appear to be like you know nothing about the role a CXO performs in a company. They are there to run the company, not to help you. Again, if you have good rapport with them, like have one on one's while you were working, you can turn them into potential investors in your own venture if in future you want to do your own startup.

  3. No point in blaming the investors too. You too are an investor aren't you? We all are investors. Don't we sell a stock if we start hearing that a firm is gonna plummet? The primary goal of an investor is to make money, and if that fails, the goal will be to save the capital as much as possible.

  4. Macroeconomics in a nutshell is a study of global economies and how they are performing, and hence there is no point in blaming the studies. It's a basic point that economies shift between producer economy and consumer economy, and similarly markets shift between bear market and bull market. During pandemic we had a bull run, with investors pumping in money like crazy because, well, FOMO. Salaries have skyrocketed because of demand, and now are on the way to correcting themselves. Just focus on saving your money at this time and this too shall pass.

  5. There is absolutely no point in blaming God, or the unknown which many perceive to be an entity, for there has never been any solid empirical evidence of its existence. No one could even define it in a consistent and widely accepted way.

Didn’t get laid off myself, but a couple of colleagues did. I guess it all started with Russia-Ukraine war, US putting sanctions on Russia, OPEC raising oil prices seeing an opportunity there, leading to inflation in the US, leading to higher interest rates, eventually inducing inhibition in VCs and VCs then pushing startups towards increasing runway/profitability, and then the startups doing layoffs as a result of same.

Tough situation but i think the most pragmatic approach is to understand if the expectations vis a vis your performance was in line. If not then consider introspection and move forward...this will only make you stronger.

Take care of your mental health. It's a tough time and can have spill over effects on all aspects of life. ..

At the end of the day understand that a company is not your family. They don't owe you anything....even if it was their fault, as long as the layoff was in Accordance with the law then it's a bitter pill to swallow and move forward. .

Understand that anger and blame will only aggrivate your issues and put you in a bad space ( personal experience).

Wishing you the best of luck and good health.

It is always investors, they build pressure on the board & CEO!

Think of it this way (only for product based startups).

You hire 2000 people to make an app which can be made and even maintained by 300 people, to hire them you tell investors you need money, then you don't pay them salaries and then the layoff, because as a CEO you want to keep visiting your office in a lambo or mercedes and for that you need money.

Later on after layoff you are left with just 300 people and lots of money you asked from investors to pay salaries to 2000 people half of which is spent on expanding your business and rest on your luxuries.
