For eg: Baby boomer phenomenon existed because the status of men got elevated a notch post war: Flourishing economy, decent pay, the who masculine appeal... which led to higher marriages, higher births (because they could afford it).
Some psychologists believe that now, more than ever, the status of men is at its bottom - which is why several woman prefer to be single. You see lots if things - birth rates slowing down, radical feminism and movements like 4B in south Korea coming up... and so on There needs to be an uplift in status of men, if we have to tackle some of these macro issues. It's obviously a very gendered view of the world. But just wanted to see where this community stands on this: especially the status bit...
I do not think it's just that:
In the past, Kids were an asset. They helped in tasks, on the fields, in the shops etc. And there were no leisure distractions or avenues to kill time either. Food and shelter were the only expenses. So having more kids was better and beneficial.
Now in current times, Vacations/streaming services/games/browsing are the new avenues which take major time and money. Child specific expenses as their education/medical/nanny are significant. WE ARE FORCED INTO A DUAL INCOME HOUSEHOLD ECONOMY. Which means that we get even less time for the kids.
Children are still a major objective for Marriage as an institution. With there being an alternative lifestyle to having children (the leisure distractions mentioned), marriages are no longer an important milestone to many.
Now complimenting this with your reasons: Choosing a partner becomes more important than before if kids are gonna be fewer. Marriage is more abt the partner and companionship. So both genders are being choosy. Men aren't choosy at dating stage but they are at marriage, whereas women are choosy even at dating stage.

I think the problem is seeing it as a competition. It should be more about flexible gender roles that are complimentary rather than competitive. Average is also subjective. What's avg for one may not be avg for another in a different context.
