Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Do people lie or genuinely know?

I recently was asked this question by a very senior person in my organisation. I have 5yrs of work-ex but still not sure what's my ultimate calling..so want to know if people once they start working figure it out or just lie through

In my opinion, an interview is a conversation between two liars.(as far as service based companies are considered).

It is not lie per se, but it may not be your actual view either. The person just wants to know what you think, what your wishes are, what your dreams are, so you can say just anything you wish. It is just like making a story, your story of life, that story may be completely unrealistic or unachievable, but there has to be a story at least. That is just your wish, and one may have multiple wishes too. So people just make some story, which is actually their wish, whether or not they are achievable.

Well there are many restrictions to the story. More of a feeding "mann ka laddoo" to the interviewer thing.

@cryonim It is all about psychology. The story you make, is usually what you believe, or what you wish for. And if you wish for something, that tells about your intent, your future goals, so that may help the interviewer understand you better. And then the next question may come. All that is just a conversation, it is not about truth or lies, it is just about your psychology and thought process which may help the interviewer take a bet on you.
