When did 9-5 stop being 9-5 ?
Oh cool, so now 9-5 is actually 9-6. 8 hours magically became 9. 40 hours a week? Nah, we’re doing 45 now.... for the same pay, of course.
Throw in 3 hours of commute, 7-8 hours of sleep, and voilà… you’re basically a well-dressed zombie with Wi-Fi.
When did this new norm set in ??? 🙎🏻♂️
Wait, you’re working only 9-6 ? I work on India team with US clients, starting from 10:00 AM, to evening calls going till 10:00 PM. All for the same pay 😄
It's no surprise though, because India has one of the longest working hours in the world:

But why
Large population of the country, most of which is not well educated or skilled. Also, not enough economic development, so not enough good jobs available for everyone in the country.
So whoever is actually able to find a job, is willing to overwork to keep it, and employers take advantage of the situation by making employees work long hours

Greed of corporates to get maximum efficiency of an employee

Agree agree

This is not about efficiency, it's about having control. Many employers, especially in India would want to keep employees in the office for as many hours as they can even if it does not translate into extra work so that the employees don't get time to explore meaningful things to do in life that would enable them to leave their job

People boasting about wlb in foreign countries is solely because we are here busting our asses getting shit done while they clock in and out just to smile and wave. Once we adopt strict working hours, we can take down all the countries that are enslaving us.

But we arent. I know many people and peers who work their ass off for peanut and popcorn increments and salaries. They feel they might not get another job if they acted all courage.

We know this the point is why we are not adopting strict work hours? Why can't every person follow time and don't work post that? How do we make this happen

We are working mostly 10 hours and the problem is even if a person skills up switches he gets same env there most probably. And the previous company also gets another employee to repeat same toxic process over and over again this cycle repeat as we have lot of people to work. If everyone altogether decide like europe to not work after work hours maybe things change? But possibly then the clients will change the country and go to Vietnam, Philippines or Brazil where cheap labour willing to do overwork is there and to be able to handle it we should be able to have more products or businesses of our own and mindset of our leaders to be able to provide healthy environment and work culture irrespective of their designation, experience or domain. (Contrary to Mr Narayan murthy and same thinking CEO's).

True true. I have the same perspective as well. Indian IT sector relies too much on sweat shops. We need to move from servicing to owning global products and solutions.

Hope one large earthquake hits earth and wipes out 100 percent europe, America and 80 percent of Indian subcontinet and 50 percent south east asia, 80 percnet china, 50 percent austrialia, 80 percent middle east, 50 percent Africa
Even stupid jobs like mine demand 10hrs of work easily. That's just pure man hours.
I have not factored commute, meetings and calls.
