What's App clean and simple UI

I think something we tend to less appreciate the designs which are simple and to the point like what's app

I have seen lot of other apps like cred, uber, ola etc making it unnecessarily complex & using dark patterns. CRED especially always gets appreciated for innovative/ head turning designs but I feel we need to appreciate lot of simple but well built designs as well

Even a simple design could be complicated to come up with. Like what option(like settings etc) should be present where, what shortcuts can you put for easy access, which category should each option belong to etc. etc. and not many apps and websites are able to nail that.
