What is the Chief of staff role

What does someone who is Chief of staff actually do ? Why do early stage startups look at hiring for these roles ?

  1. Project management 2. Enforcer for said projects 3. Founders operational bitch 4. Picks projects to own of theirs. Essentially part time PA part time EA depending on your luck.

I have seen those chief of staff to be extremely knowledgable and impactful in companies like Amazon.

But I have also seen companies where those CoS personnel were literally full of themselves and would put random CP in important meetings, without actually being held accountable for anything.

Think it varies across companies and more importantly how well the CEO/CXO can think of those roles
