What if I lie about my previous org CTC?

What can happen If I lie about my compensation in my previous company during an interview? Do they verify it somehow? Could it cause any problems? Is it okay to lie? Can I get away with it?

My last comp was 8LPA, the new org has already given me the compensation number (16LPA) and have asked for my prev. comp. Interviews are yet to conclude and they are adamant that I provide my prev. comp.

What should I do?

Never lie. They will ask for 6 months pay slips. Also, present comp doesn't matter if they have already shared the offer

But why do people ask for a 6 month payslip? What purpose do they serve?

Standard practice across industry

A colleague did this once. Fudged previous orgs CTC and even made fake payslips. HR did a thorough check and found out about his con and sent him packing the same day.

Isn't salary confidential? How did HR find out about his past salary to verify then?

FuzzyNugget
FuzzyNugget

Nope. Companies who do a thorough bg check with your previous company will ask them about the salary of the HR feels it's too high.

Jhooth matt bolo. Tera actual CTC kya hai? Be up front and tell me. Cuz woh previous salary slip ke Bina toh agay nahi badhenge. At best you can say it's 6+ a bonus that comes basis company performance and isn't a part of your CTC to save this one.

Apart from negotiation benchmarking, it could be to calculate hike% based on your previous compensation.

A few VCs have mandated that their portfolio companies don't give out a hike% greater than a threshold. I was informed about this by a founder friend. This would be rare though. It's mostly a salary negotiation thing.

You can potentially decline to share the numbers. Say your employer has asked you to keep the number confidential and you can not share the same and respect their wishes and like to keep your word.

What if they blacklist you and post on LinkedIn about it ?

I'd be very scared πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

That's the gimmick they use to createfear employee. In India there is no such thing called blacklisting and companies are not that much oriented to follow that thing.

If they verify and you get caught you might be screwed. So don’t do it I would say

Most of the companies have an HR department where they provide your details for verification so never lie.

I have done that during internships. But doesn't it work in full time roles.
