What does it mean for the profile to be on hold?

Hey HRs of grapevine, what do you mean when you email an interviewee that their profile is on hold? What could be the reason?

Most probably you are rejected. Consider it as a rejection and move on.

Why not outright reject instead of saying it "on hold"?

Maybe because it depends on performance of other candidates and the HR is giving first preference to them over you.

Basically you are friendzoned(HRzoned?) till HR talks to 5 other dudes to see if they are more compatible. If not they reach back to you.
