10000 was under the root, which is commonly referred to as √10000 (sqrt of 10000) and once we take it out from under the root, it becomes 100

Here's my take - the person digging it perceived the value of the treasure as 10k as he put in a lot of effort to get it. But it turns out the actual value was only 100.
It's about the journey not the destination kinda thing.
