Wealth creation from ESOP

Hi GVers, For those who've seen their company IPO (Zomato, Nykaa, PayTM, Delhivery etc.) during their tenure, by how much did you ESOP value appreciate after the IPO? Also, how long before the IPO had you joined the company?

For those who've seen buybacks and secondary sales in their company How much did your ESOP value appreciate during such events, if any? How long ago before the event had you joined the company?

PS: I've heard ESOP value for some IPO borne companies appreciate by 2x after the IPO.

When my interview process with Amazon started in Dec 2021, value of my un-vested Zomato stocks (originally granted as ESOPs) was around 1.4 cr. Yet I was so itching for a job switch that I let go of it. . Funnily enough the hiring manager at Hotstar had even asked me to reconsider what I’m leaving behind because it’s really a princely sum and according to him Z had put such golden handcuffs on me which he couldn’t break. . Had I stayed put, those stocks would’ve been worth over 2 cr today (but of course crediting them into my demat would’ve required me to pay close to 70 lakhs in taxes) . Do I regret it? Nah

Were you allotted ESOPs before the IPO? Did any of that ESOP vest, if yes, how much did it appreciate by after the IPO

Yes, ESOPs were allotted almost 2 years before IPO. 5% vested and I exercised them at a premium (this comment by Ashneer Grover applies to me spot on 😔 https://x.com/ashneer_grover/status/1523705945414459394 ) . They were granted at face value of Rs. 40 per share. So you can calculate by how much they appreciated post IPO.

No one makes any money from ESOPS.

It is a ploy to keep young smart people hooked on cocaine to keep burning out their youth away in the chase to vest out their 4 years of ESOPs.

Ofc the founders will fire you at 3.99 years so that you dont vest all of it xD

I don't work at startups.

ESOPs are given at many publicly listed companies as well under similar names and plans. I am a millionaire due to owning and hoarding most of the stocks I received. Would have had another half million had I continued working there but I switched.

I no lon
