Want to switch from PM yo ML

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a bit of context and ask for some guidance.

I’ve been working as a Product Manager for the past 2.3 years. While I gave this career path a fair shot, it’s become increasingly clear that PM in India often feels more like managing stakeholders’ egos than building meaningful products. This has led me to seriously rethink my long-term direction.

After reflecting on my strengths and interests, I’ve decided to pivot into Machine Learning.

Why ML?

I have prior experience with programming.

I enjoy working with data and have decent hands-on skills with Excel, SQL, and Python.

I’ve always enjoyed mathematics but didn’t consider its potential early in my career.

When I ask myself — “If PM as a role vanished tomorrow, what would I still enjoy doing?” — the answer is: analyzing, interpreting data, and extracting insights.

That brings me to my ask:

  1. Is this switch realistic? I’m open to hearing counterpoints if you feel otherwise.

  2. If it is, would someone be willing to guide me (maybe over a quick call) and possibly stay in touch through this journey?

Any help or direction would mean a lot. Happy to contribute back however I can.

Thanks in advance! 🙏

Read this. The whole context of the post isn't about - "Whether PMs step up or engineers expand their scope, the future belongs to those who can bridge AI and product thinking"?

But aren't data scientists in the chopping block due to AI

Or are you relying on being exceptional in this field

I am talking about MLE and not Data Scientists.

What issue are you facing right now?

I am looking for the opposite. Currently a DS, looking for PM roles cuz can't really sit and write code and queries anymore.
As a PM, is the role mostly functional/biz oriented?

The last line only looks good in theory. Reality is far away.
