VC here: What do Designers think about GenAI?

I am currently evaluating several GenAI SaaS startups that are targeting Designers(primarily UX). Help a fellow dude trying to educate himself about GenAI perception amongst designers.

I have worked with few companies and tried lot of products, but most of them are in early stages and problems are very contextual, which still doesn’t grasps really well. Happy to chat around more in DMs

Can you help me understand what is the problem exactly?

So, in every company has own its constrains in designing. Everyone knows the ideal solution be it PMs, Designers etc.

But a company doesn’t work in an ideal scenarios. Most product solve provides best solutions keeping those constraints in mind which AI doesn’t do yet.

And giving the context to AI model is more time taking and tedious than simply building a solution.

Hope this helps

It is extremely good but not worth the hype yet.

Tried creating screens, turned out to be a mess

My 2 cents-

Perception is that it is still in very early stages of design maturity. And no designer wants to accept that genai would impact their jobs. Moreover design is about taste and that takes time.

Reality that Ive seen unfold here and in US is that - For product / gtm design work there are a lot of great teams that are solving this problem and I assume that tools would be in good state for - problem/ wireframe to lofi designs. Hi fidelity design is not far(2yrs optimistically) . Adobe, Figma, Canva would address this space.

For 3D or complex design works- this is where a lot of GenAI will upend existing model building work, majorly done in unity/blender/unreal. Companies in AR/VR space would be addressing this along with incumbents.

Depends on the application tbh. What are these startups trying to achieve exactly? Create or optimize?

It's great for secondary research, content creation and competitor analysis. Also for understanding business context at a high level.

It's very difficult to use it for creating user flows as you need proper business context. Same with screens. All designs can't be generated based on publically available screen because, context. But pattern recognition might be a good use case ? I used to use this website called mobbin for the same
