Understanding Vendor manager role

Is vendor manager role is good after 16 years of experience in IT industry ( worked as SAP BW consultant and latest as a BA for telecom project) . This is a role that i think i would be great fit but unable to enter in current organization as no known project and point of contact. Can u please suggest?
