Two managers, two experiences.

I am into two very critical projects for our organisation and it requires me to report to two different managers.

Manager 1: ~52F, Indian, rude, non-technical Manager 2: ~42M, New Zealander, polite, technical

Manager 1 values me but still rude with me, it is her nature. I'm indispensable for the work I do under manager 1. I have power, but toxicity kills me.

Manager 2 is a charm to work with & even though I'm not as much needed for him, I put more effort into the quality of delivery. He values me too, but I'm replaceable.

The manager of both these people are the same person & I told her that I want to work with manager 2. Manager 1 is furious & tried every way to block my move. I'll probably get more money if I stay under manager 1, but working with a polite & competent person feels so much better. It was not even a tough call. The crux I felt is, once we start earning decent, culture takes over money. We need peace of mind too. Is it true generally? Have you faced similar situations?

Non Indian Managers are always blissful, you start enjoying your work.

Indian Managers (90%) kill your excitement towards work and pull you into ofc politics, always threatening with PIP.

you've already made your choice, you're just dealing with the fallout from the person who needs you more than you need them. being indispensable to someone who is incompetent isn't power, it's a prison. the real question isn't who to work for, but whether you're willing to trade a cage for the chance to fly.

In all my years of freelance and client work, the dispute rate with non Indians has always been less than 2-3%. With Indians, it has been close to 30-40%.

It is horrible to work in India/with Indians. Just horrible. That's why I quit jobs entirely, to work on my own terms as an entrepreneur. A lot more freedom and flexibility that ways.
