This is not a phenomenon restricted to bain or any investment bank. This is universal "professional" culture. there are T1 candidates and then there are ROW. If talent and skill are the only criteria for growth, then the current crop of business leaders would be sitting in home.

Top management is hired based on trust the board/investors have on them to secure and safely manage their investments. Its the reason, when during the slowdown, the fire the pawns at the bottom of the ladder without remorse. and they get rewarded for doing so.

I think tech anyway pays best in current times. I noticed some IIM A/B/C folks too at merely 35-40 LPA.
