There are so many factors that contribute to onsite opportunities.

  1. Your project should require people to work from onsite.
  2. Your job level is required to be present for the piece of onsite work.
  3. The project should have to be profitable with you onsite.
  4. Time - things like covid and recession can backfire.
  5. Luck - I have seen people within an year of joinung been to onsite due to client requirement, also I have seen people stuck with visas and expired over long time.

I missed adding the talent part. Your talent needs to be recognized as well for onsite opportunities.

You don’t get an on-site opportunity you have to beg/steal/fight for it. The most key factor is your skill set. Is that in demand or is there a requirement at on-site for it. Next is your management and account. Do they have any need for people with your skill set at on-site if yes then you have a easy path. If they don’t have it they do not have any incentive to release you to other accounts / groups which may need you. On-site IJP are something you can try but it will be very few. The fastest way to go on-site is that your current project has requirement and your client manager pushes for it. You defintely need to make people aware including your client of your aspirations. If you are a good string resource client would also want you on-site instead of losing you.
