atleast 2 years gap required between two promotions. in exceptional cases, it can be done in less that 2 years also. Promotion gives more salary increment than annual hike. Also if you get promotion then next rating after that promotion will be automatically changed to succeeding(3).

Maybe that's not true in all cases. My friend got promoted last cycle and this time he got rating 2
