Have a discussion with your project manager and N+1. If they are ready to release you and give you some time line, then wait for it.
I can give my example,my previous project was very hectic, they asked for the technical position but I was assigned to a non technical role,i approached my n+1, she said no initially and wait for atleast six months to transfer into technical role. At one point it went to the situation I can't handle it anymore .so I told my n+1 , I am going to put paper .Then my N+1 talk with my project manager and get me released. Here I took risk because in that period we had many job opportunities.

Don't know.... But I am on bench for 5 months and O don't think there r enough project to give to all people
